I attended a Christian Science Sunday School for a short period when a young child, but I drifted from one denomination to another until I was a young girl just out of school and employed in an office. There I had a friend who had taken up the study of Christian Science and who talked to me of it. She said she felt that if I would begin the study of this religion, I might help a member of my family who had need of healing.
With this in mind, I went to see a Christian Science practitioner one noon during my lunch hour. I asked him to tell me something of Christian Science, and he did. He asked me to read the first page of the Christian Science textbook by Mrs. Eddy, which begins with a quotation by Christ Jesus (Mark 11:23, 24): "For verily I say unto you, That whosoever shall say unto this mountain, Be thou removed, and be thou cast into the sea; and shall not doubt in his heart, but shall believe that those things which he saith shall come to pass; he shall have whatsoever he saith. Therefore I say unto you, What things soever ye desire, when ye pray believe that ye receive them, and ye shall have them."
This impressed me greatly. When I returned to my place of work, I opened the drawer by my typewriter to take out the glasses which I had worn for close work since I was nine years old. The thought immediately came to me: "You don't need those glasses. What possible power could two little pieces of glass have for man, the perfect, spiritual child of God, which you have just been hearing about from the practitioner?"
