GRATITUDE IN ACTION

From the May 1961 issue of The Christian Science Journal

In a notice to correspondents, Mrs. Eddy made it quite clear that, however much she desired to do so, she had not the time to read all her correspondence, much less reply to it. She requested that in the future those who were her students' students should as a rule send their letters to the editors of The Christian Science Journal for publication rather than to her. She added, "If my own students cannot spare time to write to God,—when they address me I shall be apt to forward their letters to Him as our common Parent, and by way of The Christian Science Journal; thus fulfilling their moral obligation to furnish some reading-matter for our denominational organ" (Miscellaneous Writings, p. 155).

At that time the Journal was the only denominational organ of The Mother Church. In addition to the Journal, The Christian Science Publishing Society now publishes the Christian Science Quarterly (Bible Lessons), the Christian Science Sentinel, The Christian Science Monitor, and The Herald of Christian Science, the last-named being published in several different editions in various languages, thereby reaching a wide field.

Grateful as Christian Scientists are for this wonderful provision and for the blessings of healing and comfort that Christian Science bestows, they might do well to ask themselves whether they have allowed error in one of its many guises to rob them of the joy and privilege of writing articles or of testifying to their gratitude, either by the spoken word at a Wednesday testimony meeting or through the medium of the periodicals. Although every member of The Mother Church may not be ready or prepared to write articles for the periodicals, yet there may be many members who sincerely desire to support the movement in this way but are prevented from demonstrating their ability to do so because they are listening not to God's direction, but to specious arguments of limited intelligence and lack of inspiration.
