THE COMPELLING SAVIOUR

From the May 1961 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Let us examine the verb "compel." It is derived from the Latin word compellere, meaning "to drive together." One of the definitions of "compel" is "to drive or urge with force, or irresistibly."

Christ Jesus, the most active Christian of all times, used the verb "compel" in a parable that illustrates the process of salvation. He was not a garrulous man; he chose his words well and used them with telling effect.

Luke records that Jesus spoke of a certain man who prepared a great supper and invited many friends. When the time arrived, however, his friends excused themselves for a variety of worldly reasons.
