Christian Science came to me as a direct answer to prayer at a time when I was very much in need of knowing God aright. My marriage did not bring the happiness which I had expected; rather it brought a great disillusionment. It was then that I sought God's help. The Christian Science practitioner whose aid I asked talked to me of His unchanging, impartial love and also of man, made in the image and likeness of God, divine Spirit. She explained to me that man is actually upright, unfallen, and pure and that he expresses integrity. I was hungry for these truths and spent hours studying and claiming for myself the truths found in the Bible and in Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy.
Conditions improved to the extent that I was uplifted and liberated spiritually. My health improved also. Where before I had been very nervous, weak, and under great tension, I became strong and poised, and I gained a sense of security such as I had never felt.
Through prayer and the help of a practitioner I was sustained and protected during the process of separation from my husband, and throughout the transition only love and dignity were expressed or permitted. I had had no special training in business affairs, but was content to do what God unfolded to me. Employment was secured and enjoyed; then new and better positions opened up greater and more profitable opportunities. Much self-discipline was needed, and fatigue and discouragement had to be mastered. But I always felt very close to God and could say gratefully (I Sam. 7:12), "Hitherto hath the Lord helped [me]."
