THE NEED FOR GREATER DEDICATION

From the July 1962 issue of The Christian Science Journal

To every Christian Scientist, dedication is a living part of his daily experience; in fact, his whole experience is based on his dedication to God. When he accepts the teachings of Christian Science, when he takes the name of Christ in its new meaning, the Christian Scientist dedicates himself to serve God and man. He gives proof of his dedication in healing work, in his activity in branch churches, in his devotion to The Mother Church, and in his continuing effort to love mankind with pure affection.

"To be dedicated to God" means to be imbued with the Holy Ghost; it means to feel the influx of divine light and inspiration such as was felt on the Day of Pentecost. Men of God all through the ages have been baptized by the Holy Ghost, inspired by divine Spirit in their knowing and doing. In Science and Health, Mrs. Eddy explains the necessary preparation of thought in these words (p. 596): "The illuminations of Science give us a sense of the nothingness of error, and they show the spiritual inspiration of Love and Truth to be the only fit preparation for admission to the presence and power of the Most High."

Christ Jesus lived consciously in the presence of God and moved always within the realm of divine Science. His demonstrations were proofs of spiritual law, active and powerful, right where the unillumined thought seemed to perceive matter and its so-called effect. Jesus' demonstrations of supply required as much understanding as any of his demonstrations. When we think of his feeding of the five thousand and when we see that his understanding of the nature of true substance enabled him to meet the immediate human need without limit, this experience reveals something of the depth of his spiritual understanding.
