GRATITUDE FOR CHRIST JESUS

From the July 1962 issue of The Christian Science Journal

In order to demonstrate the healing power of Christian Science, it is essential that we recognize the way in which our need for Truth has been met.

Christ is Truth, the Way in Science. This Truth is the consciousness of Spirit, God, as the only Mind, and of man as God's spiritual idea. Jesus is the man who taught, demonstrated, and exemplified Truth. God did not need to be shown the Way, nor did the real man, who has never been separated from Truth. Mrs. Eddy explains this on page 494 of Science and Health, where we read: "But mortals did need this help, and Jesus pointed the way for them. Divine Love always has met and always will meet every human need."

Sometimes we may be tempted to forget Jesus and to give gratitude only for divine Love. This suggestion, when analyzed, may be found to include three misconceptions: first, the belief that Jesus' life was entirely miraculous; second, that Jesus did not suffer; and third, that we no longer need him.
