SPONTANEITY OF THOUGHT

From the July 1962 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Perhaps nothing in the life of Christ Jesus is more astonishing than the continuing spontaneity of his powerful thinking. This spontaneity was the result of his actual consciousness of the kingdom of God, which he came to reveal to the world. His mental processes were lively and effective because they were impelled by Spirit, God. Jesus said of his work (John 5: 30), "I can of mine own self do nothing: as I hear, I judge."

Beginning with the truth of God's fatherhood and man's spiritual sonship, the Master spontaneously dispelled the errors that sprang from the misconception of man as a transitory mortal with a material ancestry. If Jesus had based his judgment of what he was viewing upon the evidence of the senses, his healing work would not have been spontaneous. But Christian Science makes it clear that he always distinguished between the spiritually real and the materially unreal. To his opponents, who were outraged because he healed a man on the Sabbath, Jesus said (John 7:24), "Judge not according to the appearance, but judge righteous judgment."

Christian Science shows that it is our frequent acceptance of material evidence that slows up our healing ability and robs our spiritual efforts of spontaneity. After contrasting the false estimate of life and the true, Mary Baker Eddy says (Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, p. 262), "Starting from a higher standpoint, one rises spontaneously, even as light emits light without effort; for 'where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.'"
