THIS IS FREEDOM'S HOUR

From the July 1962 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Christian Science unfolds eternal truths and calls on all followers of Christ Jesus to prove that these truths are true today. Truth, true for eternity, must by its very nature be true now. The habit of viewing the goals of God as attainable only in some vague future fetters the human race. Christian Science challenges this habit, urging its eradication from human consciousness and showing how consecration, prayer, and practice, based on spiritual understanding, can replace it with that spiritual dominion which will liberate mankind.

In an article called "Spirit and Law," which Mrs. Eddy selected for reprinting among her permanent writings, we find these words: "When the Lawgiver was the only law of creation, freedom reigned, and was the heritage of man; but this freedom was the moral power of good, not of evil: it was divine Science, in which God is supreme, and the only law of being" (Miscellaneous Writings, p. 259). Christian Science accepts without reservation the premise that God, divine Principle, is reigning now. It then concludes that freedom is man's heritage today. It affirms that this freedom consists of the operation of divine Science, even the law of good, which declares God's allness and maintains the real creation, including individual man, at the perpetual standpoint of constant, active, fruitful Godlikeness.

Human history eloquently attests the insistency with which the idea of God-given freedom dawns on human consciousness. It rises like the sun, wonderful in splendor and irresistible. As shadows linger until full day is reached, so to the human senses do the dark tracings of primitive and unenlightened thinking seem to pursue humanity's spiritual awakening. But the sun, it is well known, is at its fullest always; the clouds have no effect on it. So freedom, the activity of God's law manifest forever in the man of God's making, is always at its fullness also. Freedom is real now, and the present is freedom's hour.
