THE CHALLENGE OF THE SUNDAY SCHOOL

From the July 1962 issue of The Christian Science Journal

It is generally recognized that the development of an idea is most effective when incorporated into the education of the young. Therefore in order to ensure human progress it is essential that teachers and teaching be of the highest character.

Aware of his obligation to God and to his fellowmen, the Christian Scientist finds that the Sunday School of his church is a favorable place in which to sow the good seed of Truth and to encourage spiritual growth.

The Christian Science Sunday School is not social in aspect, nor is the teaching routine in method. Companionship and recreation are legitimate needs, and teachers may point out to young people that these needs are met by individual demonstration rather than by church paternalism. The function of the church, and hence of the Sunday School, is to help arouse mankind to behold and demonstrate the true status of man as the compound idea of God, reflecting all right ideas.
