Christian Science was introduced to me during my period of service with the Royal Air Force. Religiously inclined, I had investigated without finding satisfaction various Christian denominations and also spiritualism, but Christian Science instantly appealed to me. However, although I recognized it to be the Christianity of Christ Jesus, it seemed to me to be too idealistic and impracticable, particularly in its attitude toward tobacco and alcohol. Besides enjoying both smoking and social drinking, I felt they would be indispensable in the theatrical career I had planned for myself on demobilization. So it was that I, like the young man who came to Jesus, "went away sorrowful" (Matt. 19:22) to seek happiness and success in the material world.
Five years later, when I was still looking for spiritual enlightenment, I met and fell in love with a young actress during a repertory season. We later became engaged to be married. I was delighted to find that she had been brought up as a Christian Scientist, and I eagerly resumed my search for Truth. The Christ light dawned on my darkened thought, and the firmament, or understanding, began to appear.
Just before our marriage, I asked for the help of a Christian Science practitioner in connection with a problem which frequently confronts members of my profession, namely unemployment. He supported me spiritually through a wilderness experience which continued during the first year of our married life. His patience, encouragement, and inspired prayers earned my lasting gratitude.
