As a child attending a Protestant church and Sunday School, I learned most of the stories of the Bible; but I could not give any reasonable definition of God. I believed in God, but how to define or express Him was something I did not know.
When my husband passed on suddenly I was left with three children to care for; I was a stranger in a large western city with no funds and no one to turn to for help. Then I became ill, lost much weight, and found myself in a hospital for examination, with my children being cared for by strangers. The doctors believed I had a glandular difficulty, but were unable to give me any definite information.
Then one day a nurse came into my room and after some general conversation she asked me if I had ever attended church. I answered in the affirmative and told her the name of my former church. She asked me if I had ever heard of Christian Science. I replied that I had never heard of this religion except as one to be scoffed at. The nurse then talked about Christian Science to me for more than half an hour. She also gave me the following sentences to memorize, which I learned immediately (Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy, p. 240): "Mind is perpetual motion. Its symbol is the sphere. The rotations and revolutions of the universe of Mind go on eternally."
