"THE HEARING EAR, AND THE SEEING EYE"

From the December 1963 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Two of the highly prized possessions of mankind are the faculties of sight and hearing. It is sad that along with gratitude for these faculties, there is the feeling that sight and hearing are subject to matter, or mortal mind, which has the power to rob an individual of them. Christian Science comes with the comforting assurance that such fears are groundless because they do not accord with divine facts.

Man is not a mortal, embracing both spiritual and physical characteristics, talents, and faculties. Christian Science insists that individual man is the eternal and unchangeable likeness of God, Spirit. Therefore in Science the only true man is entirely spiritual. He is not born of the flesh, and his faculties are not bestowed upon him by the carnal or mortal mind.

Mrs. Eddy states on page 488 of Science and Health, "Mind alone possesses all faculties, perception, and comprehension." Her use of the word "alone" is significant. Faculties of perception and discernment, since they are possessed by "Mind alone," are obviously not shared with matter or with mortal mind. They are and must always be wholly spiritual, ever active, indestructible. They need no help from matter; they suffer no hindrance from matter.
