THE DEVELOPMENT OF SPIRITUAL UNDERSTANDING

From the December 1963 issue of The Christian Science Journal

The development of spiritual understanding is a challenging and continuing adventure. It is the only means by which one can become conscious of his spiritual identity as the son of God, thus enabling him to claim his birthright of dominion over all the earth.

Spiritual understanding as taught in Christian Science is a quality of infinite Truth. It transcends human reason and is employed in attesting divine reality. This understanding is a precious heritage; and because it is God-bestowed, it is as available to one as to another. However, before we can develop this understanding and demonstrate the facts it involves, we must desire, seek after, and attain the realization of the truths of Christian Science through the cultivation of spiritual sense. This requires us to rid ourselves of material beliefs and admit into consciousness only the spiritual truths of being. As we do this, we think spiritually; that is, we utilize Truth.

Christian Science teaches us how to differentiate between Truth and erroneous material sense; how to know what is true and how to deny what is untrue. To know the truth will correct the errors of mortal thought on the basis of their unreality and replace the wrong, mistaken concepts with spiritual facts. In this spiritually mental process divine ideas, or spiritual truths, hidden and remote to mortal sense, unfold with our every advancing step Spiritward.
