THE CHURCH OF CHRIST, SCIENTIST

From the December 1963 issue of The Christian Science Journal

In Science and Health, Mrs. Eddy writes: "Jesus of Nazareth was the most scientific man that ever trod the globe. He plunged beneath the material surface of things, and found the spiritual cause" (p. 313). The marginal heading of this paragraph is "Jesus the Scientist." Although the Master demonstrated Christian Science to the full, healing the sick, reforming the sinner, raising the dead, and giving many other marvelous proofs of this Science, yet during his earthly mission he did not give his followers a complete explanation of the Science on which his works were based.

He prophesied, however, that a further revelation of Truth would come after he had left them. He said, "I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you for ever" (John 14:16). In this last talk with his disciples before his crucifixion, Jesus said more to them of this Comforter who was to come and who would, he assured, guide them into all truth.

Jesus' prophecy has been fulfilled in the coming of Christian Science through its Discoverer and Founder, Mrs. Eddy. She was God's chosen messenger for this great work. She walked so closely with God that she was able to perceive and to give to humanity this Science and so to establish forever the healing ministry Jesus inaugurated. The Church she founded, which is located in Boston, she called The First Church of Christ, Scientist, and the branches of this Church throughout the world are designated either as Churches of Christ, Scientist, or as Christian Science Societies. This Church has no creeds, no dogma, no ritualistic worship. It promulgates the simple, profound, all-embracing Science of the Master's teachings, which brought to light the true understanding of man as the son of God. This Science is moving upon the darkness of mortal belief, and by demonstrating that man in the image and likeness of his creator is sinless, diseaseless, deathless—reflecting all that God is—it is dispelling the illusion of a man who has somehow or other become separated from his creator.
