BY REFLECTION, NOT ASSOCIATION

From the December 1963 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Today mass media bombard millions of mankind with persuasions and pictures contagiously influencing opinion and events around the world. To protect himself, the individual thinker needs to understand the method of spiritual reflection which Christian Science teaches and which exempts thought from contagious impulses.

Association is mortal mind's method of contagion. Mrs. Eddy writes in Science and Health (p. 154), "Disease arises, like other mental conditions, from association."

The seeming power of association lies in its chain action, linking one thought to another, storing these linkages in mortal consciousness, and later causing them to emerge conjoined in automatic action, as memory reproduces music and poetry together in singing. Singing may be a constructive activity; mortal association too often is a chain of enslavement.
