THE SACRED TERMINOLOGY OF CHRISTIAN SCIENCE

From the December 1963 issue of The Christian Science Journal

In her autobiography, "Retrospection and Introspection," Mrs. Eddy writes (p. 27), "As sweet music ripples in one's first thoughts of it like the brooklet in its meandering midst pebbles and rocks, before the mind can duly express it to the ear,—so the harmony of divine Science first broke upon my sense, before gathering experience and confidence to articulate it."

For over forty years our Leader's articulation of Christian Science in speaking and writing was governed by her spiritual growth and wisdom. As she gained "experience and confidence," her articulation of the Science of Mind-healing achieved a constantly increasing measure of precision, refinement, and eloquence. Mrs. Eddy's many revisions of the textbook, Science and Health, provide a lesson of humility and patient progress. Her constant prayerful attention to the language of Christian Science is an inspiring example to her followers.

The unique terminology of Christian Science is sacred, revealed truth. For instance, the great synonyms for God —Life, Truth, Love, Spirit, Soul, Mind, Principle—unfold the full nature of Deity. These beautiful synonyms stand for God, and they are capitalized, as are other important words in the vocabulary of Christian Science. The student should know where capitalization occurs, for Mrs. Eddy says in her article on capitalization (Miscellany, p. 225), "Christian Science is not understood by the writer or the reader who does not comprehend where capital letters should be used in writing about Christian Science."
