HOW DO WE SEE?

From the January 1964 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Mrs. Eddy makes a significant statement in "Miscellaneous Writings" which aids one in recognizing the power of spiritual reality over its counterfeit. She writes (p. 60), "Every material belief hints the existence of spiritual reality."

According to Christian Science, eyesight is a material belief that hints the existence of true vision, which is a spiritual reality, a faculty of Spirit. This faculty is forever active, forever complete, eternally perfect, and constantly expressed. Man, the reflection of Spirit, reflects every faculty of Spirit, Soul; therefore the spiritual fact is that man includes spiritual discernment by reflection.

Whatever the seeming material cause affecting eyesight may be, whether age, disease, or accident, it is never an actuality. Troublesome or defective eyesight is only a belief of the physical senses, which claim that the reflection of Spirit's all-seeing power can deviate from spiritual perfection. This belief must be challenged vigorously, never in an attempt to make eyes stronger or to make eyesight clearer, but to prove the all-power of Spirit and its ever-present apprehension of universal reality.
