PRACTICING THE NEW TONGUE

From the January 1964 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Students of linguistics find that the very atmosphere and distinctiveness of a nation's thought and disposition are often revealed through its speech. They are taught too that the most successful method of mastering another language is to learn as soon as possible to think in that language rather than to decide in one's own tongue what one wants to say and then translate it word for word into the other.

The Bible opens the individual's thought to the new tongue of Spirit. In perfecting his usage of this higher expression, the student finds that the practice of thinking directly in uniquely spiritual terms is even more necessary than learning to think in another language.

Christ Jesus promised (Mark 16:17, 18), "These signs shall follow them that believe; In my name shall they cast out devils; they shall speak with new tongues; they shall take up serpents; and if they drink any deadly thing, it shall not hurt them; they shall lay hands on the sick, and they shall recover."
