Christian Science was introduced to me at a time of great emotional distress. I was teaching school and felt sure that I was failing my children, my husband, and the children I was attempting to teach. I was in a most depressed state of mind when my father first introduced me to his new wife, a Christian Science practitioner.
I was impressed with her from the beginning. She radiated love. Her effect upon our household was truly remarkable. I was particularly impressed with her attitude toward the children. She did not look upon them as wild little beasts who had to be brought under control or as inferior beings whose faults needed to be ferreted out and corrected. They were neither a bother nor a bore to her. She quite obviously enjoyed them. As I watched I was overjoyed at the wit and charm she elicited from my children. I decided then that if Christian Science could bring about this sort of transformation in the children, then surely this was "the way," and I wanted to walk in it.
Upon my request my stepmother graciously offered to help me. During the next three years she gave generously of her time and effort to enlighten my understanding of Truth. Although she lived over three hundred miles away, we were in close touch by letter and telephone. She sent me many articles on Christian Science and authorized books on the same subject, all of which were a comfort to me. My work improved greatly during this time. I became more orderly and efficient. Much of the tired and depressed feeling evaporated. My awareness of good in others greatly increased. During this time a seemingly irreparable snarl in human relationships disappeared completely within a week after I requested treatment.
