In the Christian Science Sentinel for June 12, 1909, there appeared an item written by Mary Baker Eddy: "Take Notice. To Christian Scientists:—See Science and Health, page 442, line 30, and give daily attention thereto."The First Church of Christ, Scientist, and Miscellany, p. 237;This was the second time such a notice had appeared. In an earlier issue of the Journal, she added, "I consider the information there given to be of great importance at this stage of the workings of animal magnetism, and it will greatly aid the students in their individual experiences."ibid., p. 236; The paragraph referred to in Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mrs. Eddy reads, "Christian Scientists, be a law to yourselves that mental malpractice cannot harm you either when asleep or when awake."Science and Health, p. 442;
The divine reality includes only perfect God and His perfect image, immortal man. Our human experience includes perfect man, but it also appears to include mortal man, the likeness of God's supposed opposite, an evil mortal mind. The human individuals we deal with every day seem to express characteristics of the divine Mind's idea and of the evil mind's manifestation in varying degrees.
Because we learn that healing comes in Christian Science through holding thought to the true idea of God, we may find it easy or even more pleasant to overlook the necessity for detecting and dealing with the mortal manifestation. But defense against the influence of this false manifestation is essential if we are to be free to progress in spiritual understanding and in the demonstration of the truths we understand.
