One of the most revolutionary and progressive contributions of Christian Science has to do with law as it applies to God. What is God's law? And how does it operate? From a new understanding of law in its divine aspects a fresh and higher concept of Deity emerges, a greatly heightened ability on the part of men to make use of the power of divine law in meeting human needs.
Briefly put, how does the Christian Science approach to law, as this pertains to man's relationship to God, differ from the still generally accepted concept? Namely in this, that whereas the common view of law is of something primarily static and constrictive, Christian Science looks upon law as exactly the opposite. It sees law as active rather than passive, as expanding man's activity and potential rather than hedging them about, as opening new paths of progress and higher experience rather than merely warning against disobedience. Finally, and most important of all, Christian Science interprets divine law as the expression of the will of God, thus seeing it as an ever-active power in the lives of men. The difference between God's will in Christian Science and in some other religions is that, as Mary Baker Eddy, the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science, writes, "The Christian Science God is universal, eternal, divine Love, which changeth not and causeth no evil, disease, nor death."Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, p. 140;
To suppose that the law of God is merely passive or prohibitive is to believe that the Father is without power in the perfecting of mankind, to believe that God, divine Love, could leave men weltering in sin and sickness and mistakes or blindly groping their way through a wilderness of confusion and disappointment.
