Talking and Listening

From the May 1974 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Knowing that human life is fundamentally mental, Christ Jesus stressed the importance of watching both one's talking and listening. He said, "By thy words thou shalt be justified, and by thy words thou shalt be condemned."Matt. 12:37; He also said, "Take heed what ye hear."Mark 4:24;

Letting the spirit of the Master's words and life be one's model is the surest guide for right talking and listening. This is indispensable in bringing out the Christ, the true idea of God, in everyday experience. The Christly attributes of real selfhood include unselfed love, wisdom, serenity, and single-minded obedience to God. And as one practices these qualities, he naturally speaks in a healing and constructive manner. He also listens more discriminately.

Through Christian Science one grasps the true nature of God and man as perfect cause and perfect effect. This is the Christidea of being, the saving power of divine reality acting to heal, regenerate, and transform human consciousness. Learning daily how to practice better the fact of perfection, the student of Christian Science finds himself listening for the Christ at all times and voicing truths and viewpoints expressive of the Christ-idea.
