To Break the Mortal Pull

From the May 1974 issue of The Christian Science Journal

The first step in proving practical the scriptural declaration "Now are we the sons of God"I John 3:2; is for one to accept with humility and faith the fact that it is indeed possible to do this. The mission of Christ Jesus, we read in John, was to give men "power to become the sons of God."John 1:12; The power to become a son of God is the power to demonstrate in one's human experience what he already is in spiritual reality—God's image and likeness. This power appears as a result of scientifically understanding the real man to be always the perfect, eternal idea, or reflection, of the divine Mind.

When he first begins to study, the student of Christian Science probably believes he is what he seems to be—a finite, material person, possibly in need of love, understanding, reassurance, peace, or physical healing. Then he catches a glimpse of the spiritual truth of man, and he rightly expects this truth to make him a better person and free him from the more obvious ills of the flesh.

This approach is natural and quite right as far as it goes. It is a good beginning and full of hope and expectation, but many people continue far too long under the false belief of being mortals striving to be better mortals.
