We Can Help Purify World Consciousness

From the May 1974 issue of The Christian Science Journal

The deep, healing truths of Christian Science are quietly at work in the sum total of human consciousness, correcting and eliminating the errors of mortal thinking. As thought is permeated with the understanding that all true life is spiritual, the expression of divine Spirit, the phenomenon called mental chemicalization often takes place. This may be termed the rebellious reaction of mortal thinking opposed to spiritual concepts.

Thought that clings to materialism is strongly resistant to the idea that all life is really spiritual. Intensified resistance to spirituality can be seen—at least to some degree—in nearly every phase of human life. Pornography exhibits it by insisting on man's being a lustful animal. Criminal activities appear to carry out the claim that man is a degraded mortal sinner. And the use of addictive drugs stems from the false theory of man's total dependence upon the physical senses for joy and satisfaction.

It is not enough to say, "Well, this is just error coming to the surface of thought for destruction." What's going to get rid of the impurities of pornography, crime, and drugs completely? Consecrated, Love-impelled metaphysical work, or scientific prayer. We need to keep on praying to purify world consciousness—and we need to still the resulting mental chemicalization before it becomes more aggressive, claiming to destroy unselfishness, justice, and freedom, as well as chastity and morality.
