Poems

Evening and morning

From the December 1980 issue of The Christian Science Journal

One time I heard a robin sing; there was no sign of light.
I thought, "I must be hearing things, it's the middle of the night!"
I wondered at his attitude—he sang, though it was dark.
The sun, unseen to human eye, had risen in his heart.
I learned a lesson from that song I never will forget:
No matter if one's course seems dark, the dawn will come, and yet
One must rejoice and sing it here, and let our hearts embrace
A light unseen to human eye that lifts our thoughts to praise.
Oh, may we be like robins, those harbingers of morn.
"Cheer up! Cheer up!" Awake, O heart, and usher in your dawn!
