The most important healing

From the December 1980 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Opinions might vary considerably as to what is the most important healing. What would Christ Jesus, the world's most successful healer, have said? Leprosy, cancer, palsy, blindness, moral delinquency? No! The most important healing in Christian Science is so startlingly different that most people would never think of it as healing: nothing less than step-by-step escape from mortality, from the awful shadow of the belief that we are mere mortals.

To those who came to him solely because of the material evidence of his healing works, Jesus said emphatically, "Labour not for the meat which perisheth, but for that meat which endureth unto everlasting life, which the Son of man shall give unto you."John 6:27; That made it very clear where his priorities lay.

The Bible has many things to say about eternal life. A great encouragement to us is the emphasis the early Christians gave to the eternality of spiritual being; for if life were indeed a cosmic accident, there would be no prospect whatsoever of anything beyond and above it. Such a false view fills the human heart with despair. Yet Christ Jesus said, "I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly."10:10;
