Many years ago Christian Science was offered to me in a time of extreme need. I started reading the textbook, Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy. "The scientific statement of being," on page 468, began reeducating me as I learned that in reality man was created by God so he is spiritual—not material.
Shortly after this, as I lifted a pot of boiling liquid from the stove, my four-year-old daughter bumped against me, causing it to spill down my arm and onto her face. Neither of us felt any pain or heat, and there were no scars left by the occurrence. It was one of many proofs that came from my growing understanding of God's healing presence.
Later, because of my husband's insistent objections to what he considered Christian Science to be, I was unable to attend church or to take part in church activities. During this period in my marriage, I gradually became involved in a life style that condoned and/or involved participation in social drinking, smoking, and infidelity. I allowed myself to accept the suggestion that my income and popularity were dependent on adopting these standards. I was never totally comfortable with this shaky moral foundation, and eventually the marriage ended in divorce.
