While I was studying in England I was instantaneously healed of a bad cold and a painful wrist by the prayer of a Christian Scientist. I bought a copy of science and Health by Mrs. Eddy to find out how the healings had come about.
At first, I wasted time fighting the book's new ideas, because of the religious beliefs I had been taught as a child. But after reading about ninety pages I realized how closed-minded I was being. I turned back to the beginning and began reading in a more receptive frame of mind. Almost at once the Bible became illuminated, and passages that I had taken for granted suddenly seemed full of new meaning and power.
Six weeks later an opportunity came to test the new understanding I was gaining. I woke one night with great pain in my back. This was a recurring problem, which sometimes kept me in bed for days. I was thousands of miles from my home in New Zealand, and I felt there was no one to look after me. But, after some hours of suffering I remembered that Christian Science taught that healing is possible now as in Jesus' day, and I began to spiritualize my thought.
