As a youth, I was bedridden on and off over a period of nine years with a violent type of asthma and a nervous disorder. All medical methods of healing had failed—even a visit abroad to German specialists. A short time after returning from Germany, my mother was healed, through Christian Science, of a digestive condition that had troubled her for years. But I resisted her recommendation that I try Christian Science—not because of any religious bias, but because of misinformation regarding Mrs. Eddy in the media at the time.
Then one day the doctor informed me that I would probably die shortly. It was then I asked for treatment in Christian Science, and I was healed immediately. The healing was so complete and permanent that five years later I passed rigorous physical examinations to qualify as a naval aviator in World War I.
Christian Science class instruction was a valuable step for me. I became aware more than ever before of God's infallible helping presence. The Bible tells us (Prov. 3:5, 6): "Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths." This became a guiding thought in my life—proving itself true without exception.
