Christian disciple, soldier, healer

From the March 1983 issue of The Christian Science Journal

What was the way Christ Jesus healed? Through radical, absolute reliance on the law and power of God! He expected of his followers that they too heal the sick and the sinner. Christian Science confirms that Christian healing is possible today as in the Master's own day. God's love, His omnipotence, His saving grace remain undiminished; and His Christ maintains the same spiritual capacity throughout human history to transform and redeem people's lives.

Christian Scientists embrace healing as an important condition of discipleship and an integral aspect of their worship of God. And with the humble desire to be of greater usefulness in God's service, one finds ever wider opportunities to share the healing truth with others. In Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures the Founder of Christian Science, Mary Baker Eddy, writes, "It is possible,—yea, it is the duty and privilege of every child, man, and woman,—to follow in some degree the example of the Master by the demonstration of Truth and Life, of health and holiness." Then Science and Health, the Christian Science textbook, continues: "Christians claim to be his followers, but do they follow him in the way that he commanded? Hear these imperative commands: 'Be ye therefore perfect, even as your Father which is in heaven is perfect!' 'Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature!' 'Heal the sick!'"
Science and Health, p. 37 .

Each individual can begin to fulfill the promise of disciple ship regardless of his present career or station in life. Indeed, disciples who are healers are needed today in every corner of the world. And what is required of a scientific Christian healer? The full answer involves many elements. A few of the essentials include deep study and prayer with a devotion to gaining a spiritual understanding of God and of man as His image or idea; heartfelt consecration to good; humility; purity of thought; and love.
