Spiritual preexistence and immortal identity

From the December 1986 issue of The Christian Science Journal

An understanding of man's spiritual preexistence is essential to the clear recognition of his immortal identity.

For us to discern the glorious continuity of being, it is not sufficient to recognize that existence continues after what is called death. We need to see that life extends beyond the horizon of birth as well. The apprehension of preexistence helps us to understand man's wholly spiritual nature as the idea of infinite Spirit, coexistent and coeternal with God.

The truth of spiritual preexistence is neither speculative nor abstract. It is sanctioned by Biblical revelation and, when understood, leads to a fuller demonstration of man's at-one-ment with God, enriching human experience.
