Sunflower simplicity

From the January 2024 issue of The Christian Science Journal

“Be a sunflower,” a friend posted online—a reminder to me to focus my attention on God, as young sunflowers track the sun.

Not long afterward, I was on an early morning dog walk and marveled at a vast field of sunflowers, all turned upward toward the rising sun. It was both beautiful and inspiring to see.

Earlier in the morning I had been pondering what it means to pray without ceasing. As I looked at those sunflowers, I thought that their effortless attraction sunward is like praying without ceasing—keeping thought so focused on God that nothing else can divert our attention.
