Testimonies of Healing
I have been slow in giving my testimony of what Christian Science has done for me. My earliest recollection was of suffering, and for about three years I was a cripple, owing to the condition of one foot, which, if it had not been for my mother, would have been amputated.
A friend came to me one day and in tears told me of a most serious hospital experience through which she had just passed. This conversation awakened in my consciousness a deeper sense of gratitude to Mrs.
HAVING exhausted all material aids and finding myself a complete wreck physically and mentally, without a ray of hope for either life or health, I sought and found relief in Christian Science, being healed within a short time of chronic stomach trouble and other ailments. A few years later another experience came which enabled me to prove for myself, through following the rules for practice in Christian Science, that God is an ever present help in time of trouble, ever supporting and protecting His children.
Several years ago, while I was employed in the manufacturing laboratory of a drug company, Christian Science was presented to me as something worthy of thoughtful consideration. I had heard of it before only through jest, and through the careless remarks of persons who had given it either no examination or merely a superficial one.
I am deeply grateful for the blessed truth revealed to me through the study of Christian Science. In 1913, when I had been interested in Christian Science only a few months, three of my children were healed of measles after a few treatments.
For some time I have felt that it is due to Christian Science to tell what this teaching has done for me and for my family. I was under a physician's care for over seventeen years, and had undergone one operation, but it was not a success.
I have had so many proofs of the help derived through even a small understanding of Christian Science that I must no longer refrain from sending my testimony. One of my greatest demonstrations occurred one New Year's eve.
About thirty years ago I was brought to accept Christian Science and to take class instruction, through two cases of scientific healing which seemed so wonderful to my hitherto skeptical thought that I was impelled to know the reason and Science of the cure, for in the twinkling of an eye my lifelong skepticism had vanished. Though a graduate of a noted university, and the son of pious parents who went in 1833 as missionaries to Africa, I had drifted into rank skepticism, or so-called atheism and infidelity, in a vain endeavor to reach a reasonable religion.
It is with sincere gratitude that I offer this testimony for publication. At the time of my deepest struggle, while hungering for rightness and desiring to come closer to God and to know Him aright, it seemed to me that everything went wrong.
My young daughter, fourteen years of age, and myself have been interested in Christian Science about five years, and our knowledge of this teaching has certainly been put to a severe test. While she was returning home from school one day a small boy threw a stone which struck one of her eyes, inflicting a deep cut extending up to and touching the iris.
