Testimonies of Healing
Christian Science came to me as a direct answer to prayer. I had always loved the Bible and was eager to learn more of God; but as I grew into my teens, I became dissatisfied and critical of the religious training I had received.
Before I became interested in Christian Science, I suffered for many years from bronchitis and cardiac asthma. I underwent a great many forms of treatments, but with no success.
In the Journal of August, 1941, is my mother's testimony telling of our acceptance of Christian Science and of some of my childhood healings. With it is my verification of the healings, which have remained permanent.
One morning I read a testimony in the Christian Science Sentinel about a man who had worked out a difficult tax matter through the help of Christian Science, and this encouraged me to believe that I too could find the solution to my problem in this Science. At that time I was having a trying experience concerning my income tax.
I did not find Christian Science; it found me through the kindness of a tenant in my apartment who was a student of this religion. The first time I ever attended a Christian Science service I saw on a wall inside this particular church these words of Christ Jesus: "Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest" ( Matt.
Christian Science came into our home when I was a young boy, and I am very grateful for the years I spent in the Christian Science Sunday School, during which time the seed of Truth was sown. It has since become apparent that this seed, once sown, can never be permanently uprooted, although it may seem to be obscured temporarily by overgrowths of false beliefs, accepted as real for a time, but inevitably destroyed by one's turning to Truth and spiritualizing thought.
The coming of Christian Science into our home was the most important thing which could possibly have happened to us, and its advent was interesting. My mother had had the opportunity to accept Christian Science three times earlier in her life, but evidently she was not ready to do so.
I am indeed grateful for Christian Science, because it is the revealed truth to our age, the Comforter promised by Christ Jesus. It has enabled me to love the Bible, to understand God and to love Him and my fellow men more.
In 1942, during my last year of nurses' training at the Sanatorium of the Christian Science Benevolent Association on Pacific Coast, I was persuaded by a friend who was also in training to go ice skating with her. During my second visit to the ice rink I fell and broke a bone in one of my legs just above the ankle.
After my first healing in Christian Science, I was convinced that God's healing power is just as available today as it was during the era of Christ Jesus and his early followers. A doctor had previously diagnosed my case as an abnormal condition characterized by a decreased amount of sugar in the blood and had placed me on a very strict diet, which I followed carefully for one year.
