Testimonies of Healing

In the year 1903 I enrolled in a southwestern university to study for the ministry. However, four years later ill-health forced me to return to my home in Houston, Texas, and to abandon all hopes of continuing my chosen profession.

Many years ago while I was teaching in a small town, Christian Science was introduced to me by a loving couple who had recently taken up its study. There were no churches of this denomination nearby, so they invited several friends to meet in their home to help in holding Christian Science services.

Nearly fifty years ago I became interested in Christian Science through the healing of my sister of a severe bowel and nervous trouble. When she wrote me of her healing I felt that she had departed from my mother's faith and lost her soul.

At the age of twelve I suffered from rheumatic fever and complications. My early childhood had not been an altogether happy one, and acute differences occurred between my sister and me.

When our youngest child was only a few hours old the physician in attendance came to my bedside quite concerned. He said with all kindness: "I am sorry, but your baby is deformed.

For nearly sixty years I have experienced the blessing of Christian Science, which first came to our notice when a friend told my mother that he had found the truth that makes free and said that she also could have relief from the bondage under which she was suffering. The doctors, including her own brother, who was a surgeon, had said that her only hope was an operation, and her brother told her that even with an operation the chances that she would recover were only one in a thousand.

Like many others, I turned to Christian Science for healing after everything else had failed. At one time I was in a sanatorium with what the doctors claimed to be an advanced stage of tuberculosis of the lungs.

Mrs. Eddy writes on page 9 of "Rudimental Divine Science," "The spiritual power of a scientific, right thought, without a direct effort, an audible or even a mental argument, has oftentimes healed inveterate diseases.

Over forty years ago our four-year-old son was healed of spinal meningitis through Christian Science after a doctor had said that the boy could not live. Later the doctor acknowledged that it was Christian Science that had healed the child.

In 1917 I was suffering from throat trouble, and I seemed to be losing my voice. One day a shopmate who was a Christian Scientist came to me and told me that he thought Christian Science could help me.
