PEACE OF MIND

From the June 1958 issue of The Christian Science Journal

The attainment of peace of mind is one of the most ardently desired goals. Many conscientious men and women in various fields are seeking to bring peace to mankind. Their unselfish motives and loving devotion are certain to bear much fruit, but their tasks will remain largely unrewarding as long as they continue to try to understand man as a human person, with a finite mind, inhabiting a material body.

Mary Baker Eddy makes clear the only basis for an accurate appraisal of man and the universe. She says in "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (p. 124), "The universe, like man, is to be interpreted by Science from its divine Principle, God, and then it can be understood; but when explained on the basis of physical sense and represented as subject to growth, maturity, and decay, the universe, like man, is, and must continue to be, an enigma."

When Christ Jesus declared (John 14:27), "Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you," he hastened to make it clear that his impartation of peace was not temporal, for he added, "Not as the world giveth, give I unto you."
