THE SELF-COMPLETENESS OF MAN

From the June 1958 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Mankind in general has always believed in the necessity of a dependence upon persons, places, and things for health and happiness—in fact, for existence. Christian Science comes to this age to reveal the utter falsity of dependence upon matter and to demonstrate with divine logic the self-completeness of man as the image and likeness of God.

Mary Baker Eddy, the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science, writes in "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (p. 264), "When we realize that Life is Spirit, never in nor of matter, this understanding will expand into self-completeness, finding all in God, good, and needing no other consciousness."

At one time the writer found herself increasingly depending upon persons, upon family and friends. The resulting disappointments, burdensome social obligations, tension, and willfulness forced her to seek and acknowledge the self-completeness of man. Through the consecrated, contemplative study of pertinent passages from the Bible, as well as from Science and Health and Mrs. Eddy's other writings, spiritual unfoldment came to her. With it came a sense of harmony in the recognition of God as the only Person, the one infinite Spirit.
