Elijah, the prophet, once chided the people of Israel (I Kings 18:21), "How long halt ye between two opinions? if the Lord be God, follow him: but if Baal, then follow him." He then challenged Baal's prophets to call upon their gods, and he would call upon the Lord, his God, to demonstrate in the eyes of the people which one was supreme, God or Baal.
We read that the false prophets "called on the name of Baal from morning even until noon, saying, O Baal, hear us." But their cries were fruitless, for their god was impotent.
Forthwith Elijah prayed to God, and his plea was answered so vividly that we are told the people "fell on their faces: and they said, The Lord, he is the God; the Lord, he is the God."
