OVERCOMING UNIVERSAL FALSE BELIEFS

From the April 1959 issue of The Christian Science Journal

"The Christian Science God is universal eternal, divine Love, which changeth not and causeth no evil, disease, nor death," writes Mary Baker Eddy in "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (p. 140). Christian Science affirms that God is All-in-all and that He is the only creator, the creator of man and the universe, perfect, complete, eternal.

In God's creation there is no evil. If evil were actually present, God would not be all good. Universal belief, that is to say, the conclusions drawn by mankind from the evidence presented by the personal senses, asserts that there is a law of mortality, a law which subjects humanity to the ravages of sin, disease, and death. But in the sight of God, good, the beliefs of the mortal senses have no foundation, force, or authority. They claim their toll only in the realm of belief that has fabricated the false beliefs and laws.

Our Leader points out (ibid., p. 229), "By universal consent, mortal belief has constituted itself a law to bind mortals to sickness, sin, and death." From the standpoint of Christian Science, just what status do false beliefs have? They have no real status, for they do not emanate from God, divine Mind. Therefore, all error, all discord, sin, sickness, separation, death, are without one aspect of truth, substance, life, or intelligence in the consciousness of perfection, the kingdom of God.
