COMPENSATING LOSS

From the April 1959 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Everyone desires to compensate loss, from the small boy who has just seen his only penny disappearing into a crack in the sidewalk to the businessman planning his next move after receiving unfavorable financial news. Spiritually minded people of Bible times were able to nullify situations of economic distress, and Christian Science explains how we today can surmount impending financial disaster and wipe out the bitterness of monetary loss.

This Science teaches that God, Spirit, is the only substance, that He is infinite, indivisible, incorruptible, indestructible. He knows only His own infinite allness, and man, His reflection, can know nothing else. Any experience of loss, therefore, is a false suggestion. The causes for it are as illusionary as those in a dream. Instead of listening to the evil assertions that depletion is to be expected, we must know that the child of God hears only the voice of his heavenly Father saying in the words of the father to the elder son in Christ Jesus' parable of the prodigal son (Luke 15:31), "Son, thou art ever with me, and all that I have is thine."

Loss, then, and the results that follow it are not actual happenings, solid facts, or a part of man's true existence. Like sickness or any form of discord, loss is an error to which we must deny existence because it is no part of God's being. Just as we can waken from the dream of sickness and demonstrate health, so we can rouse ourselves from the mesmeric belief that we have made an irreparable mistake and as a consequence have suffered loss. Then once more we can manifest in ever-increasing degree a wisdom which is spiritually derived and which results in abundance for our human needs.
