"UNDER THE SHADOW OF THE ALMIGHTY"

From the August 1962 issue of The Christian Science Journal

In the greatly beloved ninety-first Psalm, we read, "He that dwelleth in the secret place of the most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty." Have we ever thought of what "the shadow of the Almighty" is, of the blessings that come from abiding there, and of how one may find this coveted abiding place here on earth?

One dictionary defines the word "shadow" as "protecting cover; shelter." Then, to "abide under the shadow of the Almighty" is to be under God's protection, to be sheltered by His love. The question is, How can we bring ourselves under the Almighty's protection, under the shelter of His love? Our beloved Leader, Mrs. Eddy, gives us the answer in her book "The First Church of Christ, Scientist, and Miscellany" (p. 210). "The right thinker," she says, "abides under the shadow of the Almighty. His thoughts can only reflect peace, good will towards men, health, and holiness." How simple it is! If we would receive the protection of the almighty God and reap the rewards—the peace, the health, the harmony—that one finds in this protection, we have only to think rightly.

Right thoughts, pure and ennobling sentiments and ideals, based upon a spiritual understanding of God and man, not only keep us in health, happiness, and peace but also shield us from the aggressive suggestions of evil. To quote Mrs. Eddy again (ibid.): "Good thoughts are an impervious armor; clad therewith you are completely shielded from the attacks of error of every sort. And not only yourselves are safe, but all whom your thoughts rest upon are thereby benefited."
