TAKE TIME TO THINK

From the August 1962 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Do we as Christian Scientists take time enough to think about the transforming truths we learn from the Bible and from Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy? At Sunday services and at Wednesday testimony meetings we listen to messages from these textbooks and feel that these selections are portions of the Word of Life. During the week we study these books, and we feel that we have missed something if we neglect this study for a time.

But do we not find that sometimes our study consists mostly of perusing truths that others have gleaned through consecrated contemplation and of agreeing with them without question? It is much easier to tacitly agree than to think. Thinking requires the fastening of attention on an idea, exploring all its related parts, and bringing those parts into alignment with reason and inspiration. It is learning to perceive the full meaning and to accept all the implications of beautiful but frequently only half-appreciated words.

For instance, to read and agree complaisantly that "one is your Master, even Christ; and all ye are brethren" (Matt. 23: 8) is not enough. We must think far enough to see that the truth of brotherhood includes in reality even the individuals, nations, and races who seem not to merit such consideration. Thought must proceed to its logical conclusion if we are to find a basis for demonstration. There is no exception to the rule of brotherhood.
