THE CHURCH SOLO

From the August 1962 issue of The Christian Science Journal

The purpose of every activity in the Church of Christ, Scientist, is to spiritualize and redeem mankind. There is, then, nothing unimportant in the Order of Services, outlined by Mrs. Eddy in the Church Manual. If an activity did not bear the fruits of inspiration and healing, of what use would it be? So the solo sung at Christian Science church services should not be looked upon as merely a pleasant musical interlude. All demonstration in Christian Science is based on divine reality, and the singing of and the listening to the solo are no exception.

God is the only cause and creator. Man is effect; he is not the cause and creator of anything. Because God, Mind, is omnipotent and omniscient, all true expressing and hearing belong to Him alone. God is omniactive. The only real voice is the voice of Love. This voice is unlimited in its range and beauty. Its compass is the full diapason of Soul's glory. Real art is Principle's expression of perfection in infinite harmony with color, form, and grace derived from divine Love. Balance, rhythm, poise, and beauty in their true sense are qualities of Soul.

These wondrous beauties of divine reality are manifested to human sense in inspiring messages of love and purity. They are evidenced in such things as the glowing grace and loveliness of flowers, trees, music, art, and in the revelations of Truth and its demonstration by God-inspired humanity. The vastness of Love is shown forth in such precious and simple ways as childlikeness and the joy of a grateful heart.
