INSPIRATION: THE CANDLELIGHT OF CHURCH

From the August 1962 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Divine inspiration is the keynote to all fruitful activity in a branch Church of Christ, Scientist. It lights the path for divine guidance in church affairs. It opens the way for divine Love to be expressed in the heart of each church member. Inspiration and love are needed if church work is to heal. But it is never a hard task to pray for that which we love.

How can one gain and maintain inspiration under trying circumstances? God's true idea, or the Christ, lights the candle of inspiration; and so he who lives closest to God can always see the gentle influx of light—the dawning of the Christ. To gain and maintain inspiration in church work, each member needs to live close to and draw upon the true source of inspiration, divine Love. The Psalmist must have realized this truth, for he declared: "With [God] is the fountain of life: in thy light shall we see light" (Ps. 36:9) and, "Thou wilt light my candle: the Lord my God will enlighten my darkness" (Ps. 18:28)
