THE CHURCH OF CHRIST, SCIENTIST

From the August 1962 issue of The Christian Science Journal

In this century many people have been awakening to a more divinely scientific understanding of Christ Jesus' mission. The necessity of repeating his words and works through his method alone has become clearer to many Christian worshipers. To further this undertaking, Mary Baker Eddy, the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science, through divine inspiration has given in the Glossary of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" this basic definition of "Church": "The structure of Truth and Love; whatever rests upon and proceeds from divine Principle" (p. 583).

This definition is of primary importance for Christian Scientists and for humanity at large. It requires a reappraisal of the concept of church membership from mere acceptance of formulas of belief to the experiencing of heaven's realities here. It brings alive the dominion of the Christ out of the quiescent past into present-day demonstration of holy power.

Throughout Jesus' ministration his explanations of his puissance and healing work were associated with the religious life of the times but not limited to it. The invisible structure of infinite Love and Truth surrounded him at all times, joining the teaching and practice of Christianity in indivisible relationship. His every word and act proceeded from divine Principle. Never was there a chance remark, never a careless touch. With scientific exactness he spoke and healed, taught and practiced. Always and everywhere Jesus was attending divine service, partaking of communion with God and implementing the laws of salvation for humanity.
