When I reached the age of ten I had attended the Sunday Schools of three different denominations in our immediate neighborhood, and then because of certain conditions found in them, my mother told me I need not go to Sunday School any more.
The simple rule of religion which my mother lived, and which she taught her four sons, was, "Owe no man any thing, but to love one another" (Rom. 13:8). This rule was instilled into me indelibly from boyhood. Years later when my mother passed away, it was my lot to make the funeral arrangements. The only thing I knew about Christian Science was that a friend of mine always seemed happy and joyous. And one day when I asked him what it was that made him that way, he said, "Christian Science." I asked what it was, and he recommended that I see a practitioner. I did, and the love that was showed me made a deep impression on me. So now, with the responsibility of making funeral arrangements for my mother facing me, I went to this practitioner again and asked him to conduct the service. He agreed to come and read to us from the Bible and the writings of Mrs. Eddy.
During these readings I saw for the first time the effects of Truth in the hour of need. There was not a tear shed. We were uplifted and inspired.
