When Christian Science was first introduced to me about forty-six years ago, I was walking in utter darkness, declaring that there is no God. It followed that if there is no God, there is no eternal life, and I seemed to be at the end of all things and did not want to live. I had had the bitter experience of losing a young daughter following an operation. A friend loaned me the textbook, Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy, and I read it for about a month, but found myself at war with what it said.
I spent another two years trying to climb out of the horrible pit in which I found myself. At that point, the textbook was offered me again. This time I read it with an open thought. In fact, I immediately put into practice what I was learning and found my prayers answered. My first healing was that of a hard growth on the bottom of one of my feet.
My son, when he was the same age as my daughter when she passed on, began to have symptoms of the same disease. It was as if I were dreaming the same dream. In spite of my fear, which amounted almost to terror, he was healed through the prayerful help of a Christian Science practitioner. As the child was under the age of sixteen, I was told I must call a doctor in obedience to the law of the land. While awaiting the doctor's arrival, I read from Science and Health. Then the boy asked if he could have an orange, although till then he had been too ill to keep water down.
