"What? Be a Christian Science nurse?...

"What? Be a Christian Science nurse? Never!" That's what I emphatically stated several years ago.

At that point I was a recent high-school graduate, working full time and going to night school. I was trying to figure out what I wanted to do with my life, but I was getting nowhere fast.

Prior to this, my mother had required the services of the Christian Science visiting nurse in our area. As the amount of daily care increased, it had become necessary for the nurse to instruct me in certain procedures to assist her. I didn't like what I had to do at all. However, friends thought I was good at it, and one of them offered to pay my air fare to a neighboring state where interviews were being held for the next class in Christian Science nursing. I thanked my friend and told her that I was only doing these things because I had to, that God would direct me to a useful and satisfying career—but nursing, never!
