"As willows by the water courses"

From the February 1990 issue of The Christian Science Journal

A desire for usefulness has motivated mankind from earliest times. But how can an individual become more useful, become more productive? Certainly one can pursue a good education, exert conscientious effort on the job, be cooperative, assume responsibility for getting things done.

Yet it seems that even this sense of human accomplishment is not wholly fulfilling. We may long to be more like the godly man spoken of in Psalms: "He shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water, that bringeth forth his fruit in his season; his leaf also shall not wither; and whatsoever he doeth shall prosper."Ps. 1:3.

How can each one of us experience the deeper fulfillment that derives from contributing something worthwhile to mankind, that gives us the feeling "I made a difference"? Interestingly, I found that the Bible helped me appreciate that I can make a difference by what I do, even if only in a modest way.
