Testimonies of Healing
Christian Science is a "pearl of great price," the greatest treasure that has ever been given to me, and I can never in words express my gratitude for all the blessings that its healing and saving power has brought into my life. From my earliest childhood I had always sought God, but it was impossible for me to understand how He, the All-loving, could fail to love the children of His own creating, and how He required the crucifixion of Jesus in order to forgive them.
In the fortieth psalm we read: "He brought me up also out of an horrible pit, out of the miry clay, and set my feet upon a rock, and established my goings. And he hath put a new song in my mouth, even praise unto our God.
I am far more grateful for the understanding I have of Christian Science, gained from reading the textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, than my words can possibly express. About ten years ago I believed I was the most discouraged and wretchedly unhappy person in the world, because for eight years I had been either acutely ill or a semi-invalid without sufficient strength for either work or play, or even for a comfortable existence.
Christian Science came to me when all was dark and there seemed no joy or gladness for me. Sickness in my family seemed to be continuous.
In May, 1926, I became very ill with what the doctors and nurses called heart trouble and dropsy, low pulsation, and high blood pressure. I was told by the doctor that I had two incurable diseases, but that he could help me to some extent.
Christian Science came to my notice when a friend who had felt its healing efficacy gave me a copy of the textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy; but with a consciousness steeped in material thinking and consequent material living, I arrogantly and ignorantly spurned its teachings. In bondage to a false sense of love and personality, each ringing truth contained in this wonderful book was a rebuke which the carnal mind resented.
It is over nineteen years since I first heard of Christian Science. It came to me in a time of great sorrow; but when the spiritual light of its teachings burst upon my consciousness, all was turned into joy, for I realized that God does not deprive man, His image and likeness, of any good—that good is his now.
About ten years ago, to mortal sense I was seemingly about to pass on from the effects of influenza and pneumonia. Being the mother of two small children, one a baby of less than a year and the other aged six years, I was overcome with fear and hopelessness.
I should like to tell first of a healing my little girl had five years ago. She was running across the road in pursuit of her brother when she was knocked down and run over by a car.
About eighteen years ago a friend induced me to attend a Wednesday evening testimony meeting at a Christian Science church in San Francisco. One testimony in particular I heard there that night seemed to me to be so impossible that instead of inquiring into it, either to prove or disprove its statements, I ridiculed it.
